To be notified when breeding stock deposits are live for 2026, please email BJ@tasteofthewind.com, and stay in touch by signing up for my weekly farm newsletter.
Are you ready to add the ultimate homestead animal to your farm? Are you looking for sheep that can support a profitable enterprise?
Icelandic sheep offer everything you need to producer your own nutritious and delicious food, and quality natural fiber. Some people even use them for milk.
I harvest 5 different products from my flock on a routine basis. These sheep are smaller than the average conventional breed, but they have a lot more to offer!
At this point, I am trying to keep my flock the same size, so every year I select breeding stock that are of high enough quality to contribute solid genetics to other flocks of various sizes.
I only raise horned icelandics at this point. I do not own any polled stock. I raise my flock for meat, hides, wool, and skulls. I do not milk my sheep, and I do not sell sheeps milk.
My main priority as a sheep producer is low-input stock. I do not deworm my sheep or vaccinate, instead I use rotational grazing, and I cull very hard against sheep that need extra attention or resources.
My ewes need to lamb in their first year and produce twins by their second year to stay in my flock. I have been selecting for ewes that can perform in this way since 2019, and the instances of twins and triplets have steadily increased since I began.
Deposits are the only way to reserve sheep from my flock for purchase. Deposits are non-refundable unless I cannot hold up my end of the deal for some reason- in this case, I will fully refund your money as early as possible.
I will send out lists of available sheep to deposit holders in the order that deposits were placed (first come first served). I will provide as much info as you would like in order to make your decisions. I track lambing ease, birthweight, lambing history, genetic lineage, among other traits. I will send you photos of specific individuals upon request.
You can place your non-refundable deposit of $200 (unregistered) or $250 (registered) here, to hold individuals. The balance will be due upon pickup.
Unregistered, Experienced Ewes (ewes that have lambed before) will be: $450
Registered Experienced Ewes will be: $500
Unregistered Ewe and Ram Lambs (born in 2026) will be: $350
Registered Ewe and Ram Lambs will be: $400
I do not have any experienced rams for sale this year.
Sheep will be ready for pickup starting July 15th (with the exception of ewe-lamb pairs, they can be picked up earlier if desired). All breeding stock will need to be picked up by August 31st. If you cannot pick up your sheep by this date, please let me know as soon as possible so we can figure out what will work best for both of us.
After you place your deposit, I will reach out to you to determine your ideal traits so I can provide you with a list of prospective stock that will fit your needs. If I cannot furnish stock that will fit your program, I will refund your deposit.
By July 1st you will need to coordinate pickup or delivery, so I have enough lead time to get a brand inspection and any necessary health certificates (if your sheep are traveling out of Wyoming). I will be present to help load your sheep, but you are 100% responsible for the safe loading and successful transport of your sheep to their new home.
The remainder of your payment will be due before the sheep are loaded for their trip home.
All sheep will be brand inspected.
If you would like a blood panel done for B. Ovis, Ovine Progressive Pneumonia, Jhones, and Caseous Lymphadenitus, an additional charge of $50 will be added to the purchase price. Please keep in mind that it takes at least a week to get results back on these tests, so I will need to do them well in advance to have the results ready before travel. I test all incoming sheep and most outgoing sheep as a matter of surveillance for the diseases listed above. I have not had a positive result in my flock so far.
If you would like to pick up your sheep later than August 31st, or you would like your sheep to be bred before you pick them up (they would need to stay here through October to be exposed to a ram), contact me for logistics on timing and an estimate on the additional cost of your sheep remaining here for the 2026 Fall breeding season. In my experience, Icelandic sheep are seasonal breeders and generally cannot breed before October, or after February, so they will need to breed in the Fall if you would like lambs in Spring of 2027.
Please let me know if you have any questions, I love to talk about sheep, but I reserve the right to refuse to sell sheep to anyone for any reason. I have a very high demand for lamb meat, so I do not need to sell breeding stock by any means. I have worked very hard to breed sheep that will do well in the Rocky Mountain West and I would love to help other shepherds obtain genetics that will perform well in similar environments. I do not know how parasite resistant my sheep would be in hotter and wetter climates. Parasite pressure is very low here. So if this is a top priority for you, you will probably want to look in a more similar climate for breeding stock.
I do not tolerate disrespectful or flaky communication. If I have a reason to doubt that the sheep I am selling will be well cared for, I will refuse the sale and refund your money. If you do not like what I have to offer or the pricing that I am offering it at, I invite you to look for another farm to purchase sheep from.
Thanks so very much! I look forward to talking about your flock goals with you, and sharing the product of my hard work over the past several years with you- if it is a good fit!
